District Scrabble Competition

Ely Sailing Club - 9th June 2011

Carole's Hat Trick

The sixth annual Scrabble Day was held at Ely Sailing Club. Five Inner Wheel Clubs were represented comprising 14 members plus ten supporters. There were six tables of four players and the winner of each game moved clockwise round the room and the fourth player anti-clockwise, to ensure a good mix of fellowship. After three games proceedings were halted for a superb lunch provided by the Cambridge Club. Two more games were played after lunch followed by the prize giving. As only Inner Wheel members were eligible to win the Scrabble Paddle, prizes were also awarded to the winner and runner up of the supporters group.

Carole Gunthorpe from Ely IW Club and Annette Gutteridge from Cambridge IW Club tied with four wins, but Carole had the higher gross score and was deemed to be the winner for the third time. Pat Frost and Rita Hughes also tied with four wins and Pat Frost was similarly declared the winner.

Anne Datson from the Cambridge Club, last year's winner, won the prize for the highest scoring seven letter word. These prizes, and others, were presented by Viv Doji, President of Ely Inner Wheel Club as District Chairman Jacqui McDaniel had a prior engagement. At the end of the day, which included a Raffle, Jacquie's charity, Marie Curie Cancer Care benefitted by a significant amount.
